Regular maintenance of your Hydraulic Steering Units is important.
Here are a few tips to follow:
- Ensure that you use the correct type of hydraulic fluid for your equipment.
- Check fluid level regularly. Even a brief drop below the intake of the pump will cause air in the line
- Ensure that all moving parts are properly lubricated
- Inspect rams for nicks or corrosion as these could cause cuts in seals
- Clean and wipe down the rams and cylinders with a rag dipped in oil to prevent corrosion, but don’t use grease, which can contain contaminants and abrasives
- Inspect tubing for corrosion, clean and spray any corrosion with WD40 (or similar). This will help prevent leaks
- Check that cylinders are tightly bolted in place, preventing any incorrect and unnecessary movement
- Check fluid temperature. If the temperature is too high, it could mean constrictions in the line or pump problems or (110-150F is usual)
- Steering fluid should be changed regularly, just like any other oil – a lot of people don’t realize this. Milky fluid indicates water contamination and black fluid indicates metal contamination. The heat and friction in power steering systems tends to break down oils more quickly
- The filter on your power steering system should be changed regularly
Inspect your steering twice a year; change your fluids approximately once every two years.
These tips should help keep your hydraulic steering unit working well, but if it does go wrong then give Danser Hydraulics a call. |
